The Feminine is Divine

Who would you be if you totally accept yourself as a spark of the divine feminine? Most of us don’t even have a sense of what those words mean, let alone living that feeling. Here are just a couple comments I found online that put things in perspective:

The divine feminine is the goddess is in all traditions, and has been since the beginning of time. These traditions are a mystical, magical, powerful, part of primal Mother Earth. They symbolize balance and healing, renewal and restoration. Sophia is a very ancient form of the Goddess of Wisdom.

There is a reason we call it “Mother Earth” and no one has ever disputed the term and tried to call it “Father Earth” … are you with me? The divine feminine represents the call for grace.

We know one thing for sure, every human being was born from a woman! In the past, our ancestors were connected to that which is life. We were keenly aware of the cycle of birth, growth, decline, death, and rebirth. We saw it in the world around us, and we honored it within our lives.

The world changed. Natural rhythms gave way to central heat and artificial light. These gifts came with a cost—the active principle became revered and the balance of our sacred existence shifted away from the mystical, magical, powerful, and primal. What was lost was absolutely necessary, but the loss itself was not an accident, a mistake, or evil. It, too, was natural!

Does it seem to you that we are entering another era of change? Yes! A new cycle has begun, and it, too, is natural. Some call this the age of the divine feminine, but more important than what you call it is the welcoming of this by women and men alike. We all benefit when we are able to:

  • Embrace the natural cycles of life

  • Honor all as part of creation

  • Recognize the sacred

  • Join in collaborations that nurture our planet

  • Develop systems that safeguard existence

  • Move beyond shame and blame

  • Speak from our hearts

  • Live and die courageously

  • Reawaken sensuous innocence

While working on this article, I was fortunate to attend a production that honors the divine feminine. Oh, it did not say that in the publicity, but that is exactly what it did. I went with about a dozen other Lion-Hearted Women to LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER, a production of original readings performed live on-stage by their authors. Each of the women (and one brave man) told hilarious, tragic, pitiful, and glamorous tales of motherhood. Each of their stories touched some part of my own life.

How do we access this sense of the divine feminine we don’t even know how to talk about? For one, we must honor the unique gifts that both men and women offer to one another and to the world. Yes, a woman gave birth to every person on the planet, but it took both an egg and a sperm. We know not to create a world of inequality in an aim for a world of balance.

According to Wild Goddess Life, we access the new divine femininity in these ways:

Creation. Women are natural creators, the spark of life. By honoring this ability, women tap into the collective power of creation.

Blessing. Women easily bless others. By welcoming their role as sisters and co-creators of the future, women bless themselves and one another, encouraging ever-increasing numbers to welcome feminine energy in themselves.

Collaborate. In coming together as sisters giving blessings, women share their energy and heart.

Intuition. Every woman possesses the gift of inner knowing. When women tap into their deep trusting power, they see clearly and far.

Sensuality. Women are keepers of the sensual world. They are beauty incarnate, and appreciate the beauty in their lives.

Wisdom. Women give wise council when they feel safe to share their views.

One of the most direct ways I honor the divine feminine is to think about the things you would not have if it weren’t for mothers. If it Weren’t For You, Mother, written for Mother’s Day 2007.

If it weren’t for you I would not have a life
If it weren’t for you I would not have my beloved spouse
If it weren’t for you I would not have my wonderful child
If it weren’t for you I would not have my marvelous grandchildren
If it weren’t for you I would have never seen a sunset
If it weren’t for you I would have missed the bird’s song
If it weren’t for you my soul would be singing a distant song awaiting its expression
Because of you I am who I am and all that has come from that would not exist in our world if it weren’t for you

After the draft for this article was finished, before it was published, the gift of an audio presentation Becoming Beloved: The Teachings of Mary Madgalene and How to Marry Your Own Soul was broadcast by Hay House. Meggan Watterson, a Harvard-trained teheologian, spoke about how she found a balanced view of religion that combines the divine masculine and feminine: transforming pain into love; cultivating self-love; and learning to access the peace and alignment that exists within us.

Meggan is the founder of REVEAL, an organization that spiritually empowers women to connect to the love within them, reclaim their bodies as sacred, and become soul-led agents of change in the world. Part of Meggan’s Soul Voice Meditation involved a mantra, question, and visualization:
I call myself back from all times and all places.
Where has my love not yet reached?
I imagine warm, sweet, honey dripping over me and flowing within me. I have honey within my bones.
